175 people have been arrested and 297 cases registered against them following 92 deaths due to consumption of illicit liquor in Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh. The death toll is set to increase as more people have been registered in hospitals.
10 policemen in Saharanpur have been suspended in the case, according to the excise department.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered strict action as the government is preparing to set up a National Security Act (NSA) on poisonous liquor makers and sellers.
The Yogi government has come down heavily on the matter and started a 15-day campaign against illegal liquor and sellers.
So far, 39 people were arrested in Saharanpur while 35 cases have been registered in the area. Thirty-six people were admitted to the hospital. The police conducted raids on illegal liquor shops across the state.
About 250 litres of raw liquor and 60 litres of English liquor which had been stolen were recovered. Excise Minister Jay Pratap Singh will hold a press conference at 12 pm on Sunday to talk about the issue.
