Amir Khan today announced his next opponent, and when the name Sam Vargas was dropped, a lot of people were left scratching their heads and wondering, Sam Who?
Amir Khans 2nd fight of a 3 fight deal will take place at The Arena Birmingham on September 8, but who is Sam Vargas?
Vargas comes to the ring with a decent record of 29-3-2 (14 by KO) with a majority draw battle over 10 rounds with Argentinian Mauro Maximiliano Godoy (30-3-1) last time out for the WBA-NABA welterweight title, which itself would indicate that he is a worthy opponent for Britain’s King Khan. Garcia last lost to Amir Khan’s nemesis Danny Garcia in November 2016. with the ref calling a halt to the bout in round 7, and Vargas had been down in round 1 too.
Prior to that, his other defeats were a fourth-round stoppage by a 15-0 Errol Spencer Jnr in April 2015 and before that his first loss was on points over 10 rounds against Mexican Pablo Munguia (17-4) in December 2013. Sam Vargas is better than Phil Lo Greco, but by how much, time will tell, but do not expect this to go further than 4/5 rounds.
Kell Brook, who is fighting at the end of July will be present in Birmingham for the Khan fight, so it seems that after Khan v Vargas the fight that the British Boxing public have been calling for, may well happen in December!
