Nearly 19% of American long haul truck drivers are now from immigrant backgrounds. Punjabi’s certainly do make up most of that 19%. It is not just the truck drivers of Punjab that are serving the US public, more and more US lorry stops are now being owned by Punjabi’s also.
American channel CBS reporter Jim Axelrod went to one such stop that seems to be most lorry drivers go to when passing along interstate 80. The Akal Travel Center in Laramie, Wyoming, is owned by Mintu Pandher and he serves more than just Gas! His staff cook away in the busy but small kitchen which is now attracting truckers and locals from miles around, with food they can’t find anywhere else along Interstate 80.
