The 10th October 2019, the date that saw a Punjabi – Canadian turban-wearing (Sardar) enter the UK mainstream charts. Many grime and mainstream music fans have been left asking “Who Is Sidhu Moose Wala”?
Mist, Steel Banglez and Stefflon Don are household names to many who listen to Hip Hop and grime from these shores. But, many non-Punjabi music fans are asking who is this Sidhu Moose Wala? Let us here at Daily Ent. Xpress gives you a low down on the Sardar doing damage in the UK Charts!
The Moose Wala down low:
It was in 2017 when Sidhu hit the global scene with a Punjabi duet song called G-Wagon. The song like many others was a basic duet but offered something very different. Here we had a wordsmith writing in Punjabi, not about love but about being street!! This blew up! The song was produced by Deep Jandu (you will need to remember this).
After G-Wagon Sidhu Moose Wala teamed up with Brown Boys, Byg Byrd and rapper Sunny Malton. The backend of 2017 saw this team blow up the Punjabi music scene Issa Jatt, So High and Just Listen blew the scene apart and every Punjabi across the world had now heard of Sidhu Moose Wala and Brown Boys.
The rise of Sidhu Moose Wala did not come easy though and midway through 2018 a huge Beef aired its head in Public. Sidhu Moose Wala v Karan Aujla (from the Deep Jandu camp), two unique talents, who were refusing to give in. Diss tracks, accusations, viral videos, it all went off. The internet was ‘broke’ a few times by this pair and the limelight was now firmly on these two unique talents. The Punjabi scene’s first beef certainly was controversial.
Controversy was following Sidhu Moose Wala everywhere. A Europe wide tour, which was a sell-out. Drew attention for the rowdy nature of the crowd attending. Nothing like this had been seen on the Punjabi scene previously. Desi music had it’s first ‘Hip Hop’ star. In the midst of all this – Sidhu Moose Wala and Brown Boys dropped one of 2018’s biggest anthems called ‘Dollar’. Huge is not the word.
Once back in Canada, 2019 saw a string of hits for Moose Wala, but he was back in the news for the wrong reasons when Canadian authorities asked for him to be removed from a huge outdoor mela for fear of violence. Related to the content of his songs!
Despite all this controversy, Sidhu Moose Wala dropped two of 2019’s biggest Punjabi songs to date, Poison featuring R Nait. And the song Legend which highlighted his flow, writing skills and his edgy nature all in one! This banged
A recent controversy threatened to overshadow Sidhu’s rise to popularity when he inadvertently upset Sikh sentiments with a verse in a new film song Jatti Jeone Moore. Sidhu had police outside his house, Sikh authorities were calling for his head, Sidhu apologised straight away. The song was edited and then released and banged from day 1.
Late in 2018, Mist, Steel Banglez met Sidhu, word was being spread that the Sikh Steel Banglez was embarking on a project with Mist and Moose. This news spread like wildfire and the response to the promo’s and hype has been unreal. Finally, on the 10th of October 2019, the world got 47!
A game-changer that really has set the Sardar loose to run riot in the mainstream. The flipside! This cannot be Mist’s only appearance on a Punjabi tune! Surely not! Banglez is running things and Stefflon Don – India is in love with you already!
