Ashok Singh Jailed For Raping Woman He Befriended At Gurdwara

A Pennsylvania man, Ashok Singh was sentenced to seven years in prison Monday for raping a woman after helping her move into a new home in Queens, the district attorney said.

Ashok Singh, 59, first met the 40-year-old victim at a Sikh Gurdwara, where she was looking for apartment rentals on a bulletin board, according to the district attorney’s office. He offered to help the woman find a new place to live and arranged for her to move into a new unit in Richmond Hill four days later.

Singh helped the woman move into the apartment and then picked up groceries and wine for her, according to the district attorney’s office. But when the victim turned down his offer for wine, Singh became enraged, threw her on the bed and raped her, per the district attorney’s office.

The victim escaped the apartment after he fell asleep. She contacted a friend for help and police were called. Singh later apologized in a message left on the victim’s cell phone and told her he would never do it again without permission, according to the district attorney’s office.

District Attorney Melinda Katz called Singh a “predator who waited for an opportunity to victimize this woman.”

Singh was found guilty in November of first-degree rape and second-degree unlawful imprisonment.

After completing his prison sentence, Singh will serve five years of post-release supervision and he will have to register as a sex offender.
