BBC Asian Network RAJAR Reveals A Loss 112k Listeners


BBC Asian Network RAJAR: The last quarter of 2109 saw the BBC Asian Network lose over 80,000 listeners for that period. This is slightly better than the 100k listeners it lost for the same period exactly 12 months ago. A comparison with the last quarter of 2018 means that the BBC Asian Network has now gone from 631k listeners in 2018 to a weekly reach of 519K.  A loss of 112k listeners.

The listening figures were released this morning by RAJAR. The BBC Asian Network remains the most listened to Asian radio station each week.

The BBC Asian Network delivered a weekly reach of 519,000 listeners – down from 602,000 listeners in Q3/19, that’s 13.8% down quarter-on-quarter. However, its listening hours increased from 3.7 hours to 4.4 hours. The station’s share was static at 0.2%. Year-on-year, the BBC Asian Network was also down by 1.5%.

Listening hours are down compared to the same quarter as in 2018. The same period 12 months ago saw listeners tuning in for 5.3 hours, compared to 2019’s 4.4 hours.

A BBC spokesperson said, “BBC Asian Network remains the UK’s most listened to Asian radio station as we continue to expand our offer for younger audiences; over half a million listeners tune in every week with a further 1.4 million engaging with our content across social media and YouTube. The station continues to demonstrate its distinctive commitment to new British Asian music and provides a unique platform for creativity, entertainment and impactful debate that proves popular with our younger audiences.”

The national rival station, Sunrise Radio also suffered a loss. Yet, was up compared to the same period in 2018.  Sunrise Radio dropped 65,000 listeners in Q4/19 – from 383,000 listeners down to 318,000 listeners currently. Its listening hours increased slightly from 4.0 hours to 4.2 hours. Its share fell from 0.2% to 0.1%. Year-on-year, Sunrise Radio was up by 5.0%. This time last year, the station clocked up a reach of 303,000 listeners.

Panjab Radio’s new 558AM frequency data gave it a weekly reach of 73,000 listeners – down from 83,000 listeners in the previous quarter. Its listening hours were up though from 4.4 hours to 5.9 hours.

The station’s digital youth music-only station, Asian FX published its first data with a weekly reach of 40,000 listeners. Its listening hours stood at 1.8 hours.
