Kartari Kaur who was believed to have been the country’s longest marriage to Mr Karam Chand, has sadly passed away. Kartari Kaur, of Girlington, Bradford, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, her family said. Today Bradford bid farewell to grand lady at her funeral.
Aged 107 Kartari Kaur was Bradfords oldest woman. Married to Mr Karam Chand, the couple shared more than 90 years together until he died in 2016.
The Chand family had a horse-drawn carriage to take Mrs Kaur from the family home, where she had seen four generations grow up, to Scholemoor Cemetery this morning. The married couple were guests-of-honour at many community events and were invited to open The Broadway shopping centre, alongside star Alexandra Burke, in 2015.
Mrs Kaur lived with her son, Paul, and his family.
He said his parents were considered to be the oldest married couple in the UK, as they had a combined age of 213 years. Both were born in Punjab, India, and migrated to the UK to settle and work in Bradford in the 1960s.
Paul paid tribute to his mother’s extraordinary life.
He said: “She had lived a long and happy life for 107 years with our four generations.
“The whole family is very proud and grateful for the blessings, moral values and togetherness she has given all of us.”
The couple had the honour of attending Her Majesty’s tea party held at Buckingham Palace in May 2013, where they met the Queen and other members of the Royal Family.
