Diljit Dosanjh ‘Roar’ Special – What Can Artists Learn From Him?

Diljit Dosanjh is gearing up for a huge end to 2018, his new Punjabi album ‘Roar’ (music by Jatinder Shah) is set for release on Dec 18th and his new Punjabi song ‘Gulabi Pagg’ from the album ‘Roar’ is out in the early hours of the morning. On the eve of a week that will be dominated by Diljit we decided to look at 5 things that have made him one of Punjab’s biggest artists if not the biggest artist of the last decade.

Work Ethic: “You only get out what you put in.”
Diljit Dosanjh is like a machine, the man clocks up more air miles than a pilot, he is continually on the road, gigging, TV appearances, big shows, Diljit understands the word ‘Grind’. ‘Roar’ is Diljits second album this year (music by Jatinder Shah) , throw into the mix three singles and movie soundtracks,(not to mention videos for each single, Gulabi Pagg, the first from the album Roar) the man has a work ethic like very few others, and if you are a young/new or elder artist then this is something you fully need understand.

Understanding Trends: “It’s always about timing. If it’s too soon, no one understands. If it’s too late, everyone’s forgotten.”
Diljit is one of a very few artists from the Punjabi scene who ‘gets it’, he grasps fully global trends and aligns himself to those fully, but, not all of them, only those that have aligned themselves with desi people. Take the Kylie Jenner episode, young Punjabi’s all of a sudden were talking about his obsession with the US star, in one clever move he had aligned himself with a new younger audience who are still with him now because of that connection.

Utilizing Social Media: “Social media isn’t a one-way broadcast; it’s a multi way opportunity for dialogue”
Diljit Dosanjh is the king of social media, he understands each and every platform has to be different, and he works each one extremely well. He is active on twitter with banter and his thoughts, he uses Instagram to highlight his work first and foremost and Snapchat is his friendly fun face. Understanding different platforms is vital, artists who interlink every platform via one message, never utilize social media fully. Artists need to grasp that social media is their voice, and each platform is different with individuals, watch Diljit Dosanjh’s interaction and you may learn a thing or two.

Belief In A Vision: “Make your vision so clear that your fears become irrelevant.”
Diljit Dosanjh is launching ‘Roar’ his second album this year, he may have had people tell him that this was not the thing to do, but his vision is different. When Diljit dropped ‘Con.Fi.Dent.Tial’ he made a statement, and his vision for the year was already mapped out, his new album would be performed at his gigs already booked, which would lead into a summer of film releases, then as the year comes to an end, a more traditional album following less traditional singles to ensure all fans are satisfied, Diljit has already planted a foot in 2019, and his game plan is up in a office and it’s kudos to him for saying, this is how I do it.

Being His Own Person: “What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden and it’s not. And a lot of the time, it’s what makes you great.”
Diljit Dosanjh is his own person, if he wants to work with you he will, if he doesn’t than he won’t. Honey Singh, Tru-Skool, Jatinder Shah and Snappy are all people who have benefited from working with Diljit and Diljit himself has benefited also from working those individuals. Diljit utilizes collaborations to suit his vision, he wanted trap music he went to Snappy, he wanted desi he worked with Tru-Skool, he now wants a traditional India sound he goes to Jatinder Shah for ‘Roar’. Diljit’s biggest asset is being unique and brave, a lesson for all new artists, sometimes it is only through fear you fully utilize the skill set you have.
