Diljit Dosanjh Shadaa Movie: 2019 was set to be the Punjabi Film industries biggest year, but it seems that quantity has killed the quality. Has it been left down to Diljit Dosanjh to change that with his new movie ‘Shadaa’?
We are halfway through the year and as yet Punjabi cinema is yet to record a box office smash. More films have been released in 2019 than at any other like for like point this decade. But, it seems one film is bucking that trend with amazing advance booking stats, the film Shadaa starring Diljit Dosanjh and Neeru Bajwa.
The Punjabi film which is released on 21st June has received record-breaking advance bookings throughout Punjab. A change of tactics from Zee Music saw advance bookings for the film open on Sunday. Normally advance bookings for films start on Wednesday or Thursday.
Shadaa started advance bookings on Sunday and is now set register the all-time biggest opener for a Punjabi film on its first weekend. In many centres of Punjab, Shadaa has registered three times as many advance bookings as of the new Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani’s Kabir Singh. In Amritsar and Chandigarh, it Shadaa might trump biggest openers like Bharat and Thugs of Hindostan. Talking about the clash with Kabir Singh, Diljit said:
“Let’s not call it a clash. The subjects of both the films are different. Enough screens hain Punjab mein aur Dilli mein hamare pass ki hamari film log dekh sakte hain. Pehle aise hota tha ki jab Hindi film lagti thi toh Punjabi film ko zyada screens nahi milti thi. Lekin ab aisa nahi hai. Ab Punjabi cinema ne apne aap ko itna establish kar liya hai ki humein kam se kam Punjab mein toh screens milti hain,” said Diljit
Diljit admitted that the language often acts as a barrier for the business of regional films. At the same time, he emphasised that “content ke maamle mein Punjabi cinema kisi se kam nahi hai.”
Shadaa, directed by Jagdeep Sidhu, is the story of a young man who is under pressure from his parents to get married but is unable to find a good match. Neeru Bajwa plays the female lead opposite Diljit.
