It has become a common sight at many a desi wedding – The Stage Dive, but will today’s compensation society now look at it as a way to get some extra money?
Skrillex found out the true cost of stage diving – $3.4 million.
In 2012, Jennifer Fraissl went to see a Skrillex show in Downtown Los Angeles.
Six years later, a Los Angeles jury has awarded her $4.5 million in damages.
So, what happened?
During the show, which took place at the Belasco Theater, EDM DJ/producer Sonny Moore – better known as Skrillex – asked the crowd to come forward. Then, he jumped off the stage, landing atop Fraissl.
According to the lawsuit first filed in February 2014, the incident led her to incur “significant injuries and damages.” Sixteen days after the performance, Fraissl suffered a stroke, which she blamed on the incident. A now-deleted video posted on YouTube showed Skrillex jumping off stage at the nighttime performance, injuring Fraissl.
Skrillex’s lawyer, Barry Thompson, blasted the video used as evidence. He claims it shows Moore “never made physical contact with Ms. Fraissl.
A Los Angeles jury disagreed.
A multi-million dollar stage dive.
Following two days of deliberation, jurors sided with Fraissl, awarding her $4,525,402. Of that amount, the jury deducted 15%, or $675,000, due to her own negligence.
Moore will have to pay $1.6 million. His touring company, Lost Boys Touring, will pay $1.8 million. The Belasco Theater will pay $450,000.
Skrillex lamented the decision but remains optimistic he can move on from the incident.
“There is nothing more important to me than my fans and their safety at my shows — I want them to have fun and enjoy the music.
“While I’m disappointed by the jury’s decision, I’m glad this process is over. I look forward to getting back to work and delivering new music to my fans.”
His lawyer, however, has confirmed Moore may appeal the ruling.
