Last week was saw Dr Zeus erupt on social media after his hit song ‘Don’t Be Shy’ was recreated by Bollywood. Zeus took to social media to air his thoughts after the promo for the film ‘ Bala’ had been released. The song ‘Don’t Be Shy’ was then released later that week.
Upon the release of the song, Dr Zeus took to social media again credits were not given to him. It was only after naming and shaming Sony Music India and Maddock films that the credits were amended on YouTube. Yesterday saw Maddock Films from India release a statement about the song, and it does make interesting reading:
“Karman Entertainment owns the worldwide rights to the song ‘Don’t Be Shy’ by Rouge, the early 2000s classic dance hit, produced by Dr.Zeus. Karman Entertainment gave an official license to Maddock Films for the re-creation rights of ‘Don’t Be Shy,’ which is featuring in Bala starring Ayushmann Khurrana, Bhumi Pednekar, and Yami Gautam and directed Amar Kaushik.”
So hang on, they had acquired the rights, so who is Karman Entertainment? Well old school Bhangra heads will know the names straight away. Karman Entertainment is from Holyhead Road, Handsworth, Birmingham. The two owners of the company are Manjit Kaur (wife of the late Pritpal Singh from Roma) and Raj Envy (The son of the late Pritpal Singh from Roma). Yes, that is right, the former owners of Envy Music sold the rights to India.
It is just a pity they never let Dr Zeus know what was going on! It was his creative IP at the end of the day! So do not be surprised if we saw more Envy – Bollywood covers soon.
