India: Events Manager Hacked Phone Of Female Singer & Asked For Nudes

A @Realdespardes report: A well known and popular female singer in India has registered an offence against an event manager for stalking her, the 24 year-old professional singer has said the man was threatening to circulate her “obscene” photographs online.

The “Bollywood show events manager” had accessed the woman’s personal photographs by hacking into her phone and the downloaded them, which he later used to blackmail her. He is also accused of making video calls and asking her to send nudes and disrobe on camera.

The woman lodged a police complaint on Monday and the suspect was booked under Section 354D (stalking) of the Indian Penal Code and the relevant Sections of the Information and Technology Act.

The singer had first come in contact with the event manager in January 2016, when she received an email with an invite to perform at a music concert in Hong Kong. “The event manager offered help in making arrangements for the singer in Hong Kong. Though the event was later cancelled, the singer stayed in contact with the suspect,” said an officer of the Kothrud police.

The singer said she had never met the suspect in person, but had regularly talked to him over the phone. “He had even proposed marriage to her, but she had turned down his proposal,” the office said.

In 2017, the suspect convinced the woman to download an application on her phone when the gadget had developed a snag. This app helped him access data on the unsuspecting woman’s phone, including her personal photographs. The suspect later morphed some of the images and started blackmailing the singer by threatening to make them viral. “He used to ask the singer to disrobe on camera, and the singer complied because she feared he would circulate the obscene photos if she refused,” the officer said.

“The singer recently told a friend about her ordeal. On Monday, she came with her parents and lodged the complaint,” the officer said.

Inspector Shankar Khatke is investigating the case. Story sourced via The Pune Press.
