Music reality shows may well be losing their mass appeal, but back in the noughties, they were huge. The voice of India was ‘the’ leading music talent show in India during that period. In 2007 the winner of the show was Ludhiana born singer Ishmeet Singh Sodhi.
Ishmeet Singh Sodhi was born on 2nd September 1989. Known as the Sonu Nigam of Punjab, this Singer gained popularity at a relatively young age. He was the winner of The Voice of India in 2007, aged only 18. Ishmeet, who lived in Ludhiana, Punjab, won the Star Plus show. Singh’s first album was a religious Gurbani album called ‘Satguru Tumere Kaj Sawar’.
Singers Abhijit and Alka Yagnik were judges on the show and Ismeet Singh became their favourite singer. He was awarded the Winner Trophy by Lata Mangeshkar and the journey that Ishmeet embarked on after that would probably be the will of every young man. Singh did his schooling at Gurunak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana.
Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in commerce, he was a second-year student at MNC College in Mumbai. But his life was cut short in tragic circumstances. Ishmeet had gone to the Maldives in connection with performance. His body was found in a swimming pool two days before his program. Questions arose about how Ishmeet died!
Ishmeet didn’t know how to swim, him going swimming was out of the ordinary. It was then claimed that Ishmeet fell into the pool and died due to slipping. The strange thing about the whole thing was that Singh had an Injury to his head. The wound was deep and no sharp objects were in and around the pool at the time.
An inquiry was launched into Ishmeet’s death, but nothing concrete was found. The death remains a mystery, but one thing is for sure, India lost one of its rising stars too young and too soon. RIP Ishmeet Singh Sodhi
