India and its attitude towards rape victims are in the news once again this week. Now in another horrific incident news has emerged from Unnao, Uttar Pradesh. A 23-year-old rape victim is fighting for her life after she was set on fire while going to court in northern India.
The rape survivor is battling for her life with 90 per cent burns after been attacked on Thursday.
Five men including two of her alleged rapists have been arrested on suspicion of setting her on fire, police say. The woman was on her way to a train station when a group of men assaulted her and dragged her to a nearby field, where they set her on fire, according to reports in local media.
Doctors attending on her at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Hospital here said she is in a “very serious” condition.
“The condition of the girl who was set on fire and bought here at 10 am is very serious. She has 90 per cent burn injuries and we are taking utmost care,” Medical Superintendent Dr Ashutosh Dubey told PTI.
In a chilling recap of the incident, the woman said in her statement to Sub Divisional Magistrate Dayashankar Pathak that she was going to Rae Bareli to pursue her case. When she reached the Gaura turn, near her home, Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shivam Trivedi and Shubham Trivedi attacked her and set her afire.
A flame, she ran for a while before eyewitnesses saw her and informed police, which sent her to the Community Health Centre from where she was sent to the district hospital before being referred to Lucknow, police said.
The five men arrested on charges of the assault on her life while she was on her way to a court in Rae Bareli on Thursday are Harishankar Trivedi, Ram Kishore Trivedi, Umesh Bajpai, Shivam and Shubham Trivedi, Circle Officer Gaurav Tripathi said in Unnao.
Of the five, Shivam and Shubham Trivedi are accused in the case and are out on bail.
