Sarwan Singh aged 92-year-old was arrested on his arrival at Birmingham Airport. The arrest was made after an allegation he sexually assaulted a teenage girl on a bus. The alleged incident occurred on a Harlequin bus in Babington Lane, Derby, on February 22, 2018.
Sarwan Singh, who only spoke through an interpreter spoke only to confirm his name and that he was struggling to see or hear the proceedings when he appeared in court. The 92-year-old pensioner, from Derby, appeared at Derby Crown Court, in the East Midlands, according to DerbyshireLive.
The court was told Singh, of Crewe Street, Normanton, was arrested when he arrived back in the UK on a flight from India at Birmingham Airport on December 23 and was brought to court by family members on Christmas Eve. It is alleged the pensioner carried out the sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl
He is yet to enter a plea and his case was adjourned until February 7 so he can speak to his solicitors and so reports can be obtained about his fitness to plead to the charge, the hearing was told.
Judge Jonathan Bennett handed him bail on the conditions that he surrender his passport at St Mary’s Wharf police station, in Chester Green, and that he resides at a family member’s home in Fieldfare Court, Heatherton Village, until his next court appearance.
