The Royal Wedding v The Most Expensive Indian Weddings!


Prince Harry will marry Meghan Markle in the St George Chapel of Windsor Castle on Saturday 19 May. The cost of the wedding itself – the food, the Ralph & Russo Couture dress etc – will be picked up by the Royal Family. The estimated cost of the wedding has been put around the £32m mark! You know what Indians are like, we can not be beat, so here is a list of the 5 most expensive Indian weddings, with the top 3 making the royal wedding look like more of a ladies Sangeet than a the actual wedding.

The one big difference between a Royal wedding and those listed below is the boost to the British economy a royal wedding brings. The British economy is set to get a boost of £500m,  thanks to a boost of £200 million to tourism and an additional £200 million to be spent on celebrations and merchandise as well as £100 million in media coverage for the UK.

5 Lalit Tanwar (son of Congress minister, Kanwar Singh Tanwar) weds Yogita Jaunapuria

Congress Minister Kanwar Singh Tanwar’s son, Lalit’s wedding to Yogita Jaunapuria took place in 2011 in Delhi. The son of the minister received an outrageously expensive wedding gift, which was a Bell 429 helicopter from his in-laws. Approx Cost  £22m

4 Vanisha Mittal (Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter) weds Amit Bhatia

Lakshmi Mittal’s daughter, Vanisha got married to Amit Bhatia in 2004 in Versailles. The wedding was held at the Palace of Versailles and it is the only private function ever to have been held there. Shah Rukh Khan, Kylie Minogue, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Juhi Chawla, Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukherjee performed at the wedding and the dance sequences were choreographed by Farah Khan. 3 Brahmani and Rajeev Reddy

While you were sweating out your body weight in ATM queues during the demonetisation spell last year, mining baron Janardhan Reddy’s daughter Brahmani was drowning too — but under the weight of her Rs 17 crore Kanjeevaram sari and Rs 90 crore worth of jewels.

The guests weren’t doing too badly either — after receiving personalised wedding invites via LCD screens (that reportedly cost a whopping Rs 5 crore), they were fed in utensils crafted out of pure gold and silver. After drawing the ire of the cash-strapped masses, the hosts tried to downplay the Rs 500 crore bill to just 30 crores. 2 Shrishti Mittal (Lakshmi Mittal’s niece) weds Gulraj Behl

Lakshmi Mittal’s niece, Shrishti Mittal’s wedding took place in Barcelona at the National Museum of Catalan Art atop a hill. Over 200 chefs, butlers and assistants were flown in from India and Thailand. The wedding cake was a six-tier construction weighing 60 kilos. Approx Cost £48m

1 Sahara Chief Subrata Roy’s sons’ double wedding

The weddings of Subrata Roy’s sons, Sushanto with Richa and Seemanto with Chandini took place at the Sahara Auditorium in Lucknow in 2004 is the Most Expensive Indian wedding. The wedding dresses were from famous designers like Rohit Bal and Sabyasachi Mukherjee. The venue was luxuriously decorated with mashals , torch lights, wax lights and prism glasses. There were 110 types of dishes from across the world. Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Kapil Dev, Anil Ambani, along with several other famous celebrities were present at the event. Approx Cost £49m
