X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)
X-Men: Dark Phoenix: This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.
Right so, I’m not the biggest fan of the X-Men series. In fact, I have lost track of which ones I have and have not watched, this includes the various Wolverine movies. However, I can confirm that I have watched the franchise with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender and I enjoyed the movies (mainly due to Fassbender). Was X-Men: Dark Phoenix as good as its predecessors? Was it as action-packed and as exciting? …… The answer is no!
Ok, so it wasn’t terrible but it lacked that edge of the seat excitement for such a big franchise. Apparently, it is also the last X-Men movie in this franchise and you would expect an epic ending, just like The Avengers: Endgame. But no, it didn’t match that par.
Sophie Turner lacked that same darkness that we saw in Famke Janssen when she became the Dark Phoenix in X-Men 2 or, was it X-Men 3? I can’t remember but, the one where she turns dark. Jessica Chastain was just as dull as the villain? She didn’t distil any fear into me of the slightest! As for the other characters they were all good and played their parts well.
Whilst the special effects were decent and the storyline itself is interesting, unfortunately, the weakness lies within the script and I’m sorry to say but, also Sophie Turner as well; she just wasn’t great at being the Dark Phoenix.
Taking all of that on board, you should still go and watch the movie. You’ve watched the other god knows how many X-Men and Wolverine movies, so what is one more. Plus, it is the last one in this franchise. And finally, there are no post end credit scenes. Go check it out!
3 out of 5 stars. Remember, it’s my opinion!
